So I get to spend copious amounts of unplanned money this weekend and try not to kill myself or my buddy coming to help. My retaining wall to the left of my driveway, seen below, is all rocks. Well this winter the rocks decided they did not want to stay put and have massively shifted to the point that I have wedged a massive amount of bricks under one bolder (few hundred pounds) so that it wont fall out onto my car.

Kinja'd!!!

So I secured rental of one of these, for $500 for the weekend plus $50 delivery pickup charge and $20 to take a 14 day temporary hydraulics license. Honestly I was a little scared on how easy it was to get this. One certificate from an online course which was 9 questions which included; “True or false the bucket is a safe place to ride on the tractor”, Someone put 911 on speed dial.

Kinja'd!!!

The plan is to remove all the boulders and throw them in a different part of the property as back fill and to create a retaining wall out of 6x6 PT boards that I will spike into the ground with Rebar, possibly some 6x6 if I rent a post hole digger. I am sure I will have plenty of pictures from the adventure, I think I might set up my go-pro to do a time lapse of the project for the hell of it.

If anyone has any tips on what to do please feel free to let me know. This is going to be interesting and fun. Also if anyone gets bored in MA your welcome to come be put to work. I provide beer after.

Railroad ties and rebar seem to be a popular way of making a retaining wall.

Ah, retaining walls... ours is some concrete variant and starting to fall apart. I hate random life details like this. I would be so much happier day-to-day paying a flat maintenance fee than having to deal with it myself. Caring for and about the two cars is enough for me :}

Get a big 3/4inch Auger/Drill if you're going through railroad ties. Whatever they treat them with makes them a pain to drill through.

Yeah, renting non-typical homeowner tools is needed. And appropriate stuff to drive the rebar.

Be sure to provide drainage on the back side of the retaining wall. If you don’t, the water that collects behind it will freeze and you will be doing this job again next year.

I feel terrible saying it but you probably should have gotten a skid steer with forks and a bucket. I used to manage a stone yard and these are invaluable for moving around pallets as well as individual builders and heavy stones. Very easy to pick the rocks up and place them with the forks, as opposed to rolling them out of the bucket.

I like a gravel back fill behind the wall and even a filter fabric between the gravel and the soil. RR ties are pretty good if a bit ugly.

I have some other digging that the backhoe will be good for. I’ll make it work, also some of the rocks are small and would be hard to fit unless the forks are slammed together.

Didn’t think about that, I’ll add gravel to the shit I have to buy at Lowes/HD

I’ll do my best, hopefully my time spent on construction sites will have caused me to learn something by osmosis. Figuring out truck vs van rental right now for materials. Then I’ll figure out what I need and get it set .

Edit: im driving up to Leominster to sell a set of headers this weekend and ive driven a couple to a few hours for parts In the past so im not worried about a hundred-ish miles. except maybe in a 78 blazer with a 4 speed on the floor (that only really has three gears because the 1st in super low gearing)
